Watercolor World

Both my kids have clearly inherited their mom's artistic talents. E, in addition to being an amazing musician, singer and songwriter, is a talented cartoon and caricature artist. My girl is multi-talented as well.
A has always been artistic. Her first masterpieces were in clay. Her nimble fingers sculpted impossibly detailed miniatures that she turned into earrings or keepsakes. I will always remember the beaver she created. Barely an inch tall, he had comically large buck teeth and a perfectly patterned flat tail. Later, there were frogs, tiny cupcakes with tinier sprinkles and her whimsical earring pairs: a chocolate chip cookie for one ear with a bottle of milk for the other, a cat head for the left ear and a fish for the right, a pair of tacos...they were fun and perfect and a money maker. Her list of customers grew and she began to build a savings account on the proceeds.
Clay letters on a custom-painted canvas make a great gift.
Her idea to turn the clay in to letters resulted in yet another creative, money-making streak.
Then, sophomore year, she discovered watercolor. Her very first creation was amazing. She painted Christmas cards last year and again this year, using the money she raised for our church and to help pay her way to Student Leadership University.
Over Christmas, she received a special request for a series of bird cards. Her very first creation was a chickadee. It is stunning. I am an in awe. I also have resigned myself to the notion that our formal dining room will always be an art studio and that the sturdy table will always be filled with paint, clay, charcoal pencils and brushes of every size. Given the beauty these tools produce, I can live with that.
I can't think of a better way to spend a wintry day than to remember what the warm weather will bring, through A's art.
